Our Platform

Our platform centers on two important ideas -- the progress, we'll make during our administration, and the proven leadership we've already shown and will continue to show. Please take a moment to consider our proposals, and give us your feedback.

Progress

Though our track record speaks for itself, we also have new, specific, and realistic ideas for Eastern’s continued improvement.

More student jobs
Continuing efforts begun in SGA this year, we will use the leverage of student government to establish more opportunities for student employment.  Even beyond Federal Work Study, many existing support staff jobs, such as laborers, groundskeepers, clerical staff, drivers and parking enforcement officers, can be performed by students.  And for the cost of one full-time professional, the University can hire several more student workers.  The funding for these positions already exists wherever a full-time position is offered- we’ll ensure that it goes to creating more student jobs.

Extended bus routes
Now in his third year on the University Parking and Transportation Committee, few people on campus are more intimately familiar with the opportunities that exist for better transportation service than Doc Fifer.   Though the idea of extending the campus shuttle service to off-campus locations is frequently talked about, we’ll make sure that it actually happens.  Under our administration, residents can look forward to leaving their cars in those precious parking spots and easily accessing their favorite off-campus spots like Wal-Mart, the Bypass, restaurants, and grocery stores.

Extended dining hours
There are many things that Dining Services does well, but their hours aren’t always as flexible as we’d like.  We’re both veterans of the University Dining Advisory Committee, and have the knowledge of dining service operations necessary to make realistic changes. The downstairs Powell Food Court should be open throughout the weekend, period. We’ll work closely with Dining Services to make sure that it is.

Greek Row
Greek housing is good for the entire community. Often stereotyped and maligned, many people don’t know that our Greek system is actually award-winning or realize that it provides valuable experiences in leadership, project management, and social development. Though we’re not Greek ourselves, we recognize the importance of Greek housing both to the Greek community and to the University community as whole.  A Greek Row would strengthen our award-winning Fraternities and Sororities, afford better opportunities to deal with alcohol, parties, and risky situations, and put Eastern in the league of colleges and universities that have truly well-rounded social opportunities.  And what sets our ticket apart from others is that we have a plan for getting it done. Using a five-step plan for ensuring financial viability, our proposal centers on the phased conversion of University-owned houses along Summit Street from rental units into affordable Greek housing. Only our ticket has the experience that it takes to bring all the stakeholders to the table and leave with commitments to a strategic plan.

Proven Leadership

Being Student Body President and Vice President are tough jobs that require a unique set of skills, and we’re the only ticket that has been there before.  We’ve built crucial relationships and accomplished significant projects.  Together, we’re going to keep working for you.

The Colonel Path - Phase II
Termed a “point of pride” by President Glasser, The Colonel Path represents more than just safety -- it is a symbol of a renewed emphasis on the importance of the student body and the contributions we make.  Though Doc Fifer was successful in making the idea a reality, things have only just begun. Construction is set to wrap up just in time for the next school year, and we look forward to developing such features as a shuttle stop at the top of the path, opportunities for registered student organizations to sponsor portions of the path, and a student-led group to keep the path safe.

Powell Center Renovation
As Student Body President this year, Doc Fifer asked for and received $200,000 to make renovations in the Powell Student Center.  Though a few ideas have already been proposed, a project of this importance should be done with as much student input as possible, and we’ll see to it that it is.  We’ll hold focus groups, survey the student body, and find out what amenities are truly needed to identify the best way to spend this money to the benefit of the student body. And we’re talking more than just new furniture- ideas such as a multi-purpose theater/ performance space, dedicated RSO work space, and an infusion of flexible technology are all on the table.

Forums that mean something
Almost every year it seems like candidates promise better communication, but Lindsey Cross has turned her experience leading the Student Senate into specific ideas for getting it done.  In addition to improving SGA’s internal operations, we’ll hold monthly forums for you to speak your mind. Our forums will be more than window dressing. They will be times when SGA’s most senior leadership will listen to you and your concerns, and turn those concerns into meaningful action. No scripts, no spin, no agenda -- just a time to make your voice heard and hold us accountable.
