IN CASE YOU'RE JUST JOINING US: I have been an active
Democrat since 1995. I was a delegate to the 2000
Democratic National Convention and attended the 2004 Democratic National
Convention. I thought it would be interesting to see how the Republicans
do it, and with their convention only a short train ride away, I couldn't
pass up the opportunity. I attended as a photographer, and I didn't
pretend to be a Republican or a fan of President Bush. I am grateful
for the generally warm reception I received from the Virginia delegation,
and I'm proud to have been friends with several of the delegates for
many years. Attending this convention does not mean that I endorse its
message, nor does being photographed with any particular participant
mean that I share his or her beliefs. It just goes to show that friendly
people can disagree about important issues. I've spent a little while
in politics now, but I'm still idealistic enough to think that all of
us, regardless of party, are working towards the same ultimate goal
of making this country the best it can be. I disagree with Republicans
about how to accomplish that goal, but I appreciate their letting me
observe how they go about it. |
